Customer Benefits for Residents
Soundblock (S-block) is a railway noise barrier placed on the embankment, close to the train. Because the barrier is positioned near the noise source, its height only needs to be 73 centimeters above the railhead to achieve an often acceptable noise reduction of 5-11 dB, depending on the train type.

In addition to preserving the landscape by not obstructing the view for residents along the railway, Soundblock is also a cost-effective solution compared to traditional high barriers. This is because Soundblock requires no foundation, as it remains stable on the railway embankment due to its own weight of approximately one ton per meter.
When a barrier is placed very close to the train, sound waves bounce multiple times between the barrier and the train’s side. To counteract this effect, we use an innovative and highly effective sound absorber made from glass and flint (Vitrumit absorber), which converts sound waves into heat, effectively reducing noise.

At Z-bloc Norden AB, we have been developing and manufacturing railway-adjacent noise barriers since 1999. Over the years, we have delivered many kilometers of trackside barriers to 35 different locations, including 5 km for the Botniabanan railway and 10 km for SL in Stockholm.
Internationally, Norway has installed 7 kilometers of trackside barriers between Sandnes and Stavanger. Finland has implemented smaller sections, while in Germany, Deutsche Bahn is preparing for the future by constructing a test section with Z-bloc barriers, paving the way for large-scale procurement in the coming years.
With approximately 40 different railway sections equipped with trackside noise barriers, Sweden is years ahead of many other European countries. At Z-bloc Norden, we take great pride in having played a key role in driving this development forward.
